Biographer reveals what he learned about research, Ringo Starr. July 12, 2015 | 6:00am. “It’s just a happy coincidence.” That’s my oft-repeated mantra when I’m asked if I’m related to Ringo Starr, the narrative essay structure, subject of my new book, “Ringo: With a Little Help” — the first comprehensive biography of The World’s Most Famous Drummer. You’d be surprised how often I’m asked that particular question, mostly by people who either don’t know — or just plain forgot — that Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey in Liverpool, England, 75 years ago on July 7, 1940. But that’s not the only thing about Ringo that people forget — or didn’t know about him in the first place: The ingrained Dickensian image (particularly among Beatles fans) of action research papers, Richy Starkey growing up dirt-poor in Liverpool? Not quite. While Richy and his mom, Elsie, lived in narrative essay the Dingle — a gritty part of town located near the rough-and-tumble Liverpool docks — Elsie worked several jobs (barmaid, cleaning houses) to keep a relatively comfortable roof over action research education papers Richy’s head. A photo from dissertation, his youth shows Richy and his childhood friend Dave Patterson posing in sharp suits — and the Starkey grandparents lived just down the street from their adored grandson and often cared for Richy while Elsie was working. Getty Images Ringo Starr was not born clenching drumsticks in research education papers his hands. In fact, he didn’t really exhibit a passion for drumming until he was hospitalized for two years for thesis statement, tuberculosis when he was 12 — the action education papers, second of two extremely lengthy hospital stays — when patients participated in a musical program. That led Richy to discovering that cardboard cotton holders, stripped of their cotton, made for research, great drumsticks to research thwack away on his bed and locker. (His first hospital stay, when he was 6, followed a burst appendix which almost killed him — and essay kept him bedridden in Liverpool’s Royal Children’s Infirmary for action papers, nearly a year.) When Ringo joined his first professional band, Rory Storm and thesis the Hurricanes, it was flamboyant band leader Rory Storm — born Alan Caldwell — whose idea it was to change Richy Starkey’s name to education papers Ringo Starr, reflecting his drummer’s penchant for wearing lots of rings (the “Starr” just sounded right).
John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison didn’t just pluck Ringo from obscurity after firing their original drummer, Pete Best. Martina Dissertation. Ringo was considered the coolest, best drummer in action education Liverpool (he had a beard, a car and lancia parts a gray streak in his hair) and he knew John, Paul and George from action education, Hamburg — where the Beatles shared the college, bill with Rory Storm. He’d already filled in for Best several times (while still a member of action research, Rory’s band). The Beatles, about to go into lancia, the studio with George Martin — and brimming with self-confidence — knew they needed the best drummer around. That was Ringo. Listen to his isolated drum track on “I Feel Fine.” Classic. When The Beatles first arrived in the US for their iconic appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” it was Ringo — and not John, Paul or George — who was considered the “Favorite Beatle.” He was “The Funny One” with the big nose, infectious smile and sharp Liverpool wit. He was the action papers, breakout star of the group’s first movie, “A Hard Day’s Night,” and elicited the most critical acclaim for his deadpan delivery and natural style. It was Ringo who was the first Beatle to quit the group — walking out during the “White Album” sessions in 1968 because he was fed up with the acrimonious infighting (and wasn’t happy with his drumming). He spent a few weeks on friend Peter Sellers’ yacht, where he wrote “Octopus’s Garden,” while John, Paul and George bombarded him with telegrams imploring him to parts return. When he came back, George — who’d pushed the education, hardest to recruit Ringo into remember, the Beatles in 1962 — decorated the entire recording studio, and Ringo’s drum kit, with flowers. Ringo’s oldest son, Zak Starkey, exhibited an early talent for drumming — but Ringo never took much interest, giving Zak one lesson before calling it quits. No matter; Ringo’s pal, Who drummer Keith Moon — Zak’s godfather, “Uncle Keith” — gave the young lad drum lessons and even brought him a huge, Moon-sized drum set one Christmas. Action Research Papers. Zak is now considered one of the best drummers in rock — and has played with Oasis, the analysis for dissertation, Who and Led Zeppelin (subbing for their late drummers, Moon and John Bonham).
After The Beatles broke up in 1970, it was Ringo who had the earliest success as a solo artist, firing off a string of hits including “It Don’t Come Easy,” “Back Off, Boogaloo,” “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen,” with a little help from his ex-bandmates, particularly George Harrison — who’d already had a short-lived affair with Ringo’s first wife, Maureen. Ringo’s reaction to education the betrayal? “Better you than someone we don’t know.” Fast-forward to 1994: Ringo, already happily married to Barbara Bach, was sitting at lancia, Maureen’s bedside when she died (at 48) from research education papers, leukemia. Sweet and touching. Ringo partied away the ’70s and ’80s — mostly with pals Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson — and got dead drunk on psychology research proposal the way to rehab with wife Barbara in 1988. Exploring Types of Educational Action Research: Implications for
Software for Writing a PhD Thesis. There are four categories of education, software for thesis writing: (1) project organizing; (2) word-processing; (3) bibliographic organization; and (4) specialty software. Bowdoin College Prompt. Here are some of the papers best programs, along with those I find essential to bowdoin, my PhD thesis and scholarly writing workflow. [UPDATED 01 July 2016] Now I’ll be using a macbook pro for the task, but many of the software programs I mentioned can run on mac or pc (though some run better on one or the other). Some might use a word-processing program for action research education papers, this while others might find a specialized program instead. I’ve heard of many people using Evernote, a free program I also have and like okay but use very little. (If you use Evernote, you must consider Brett Kelly’s guide, Evernote Essentials! ) There’s also MS OneNote, Simplenote, and Springpad (see a review of these here).
I’ve decided on a more complicated yet powerful program, Scrivener. It’s difficult to bowdoin college prompt, describe what this program does in few words. It is similar to a word-processor–it in fact has a streamlined word processor as a main feature. But it is action research, much more. It allows you to compose, organize and how to write data analysis edit a complicated project (like a dissertation, book, or screenplay), its various chapters (or documents), notes and relevant documents (pdfs of articles, summary notes or quotes, etc.), among other things. Learning the program takes an papers, initial investment in time (perhaps a Saturday morning), but the tutorial document walks you through the program’s main features quite nicely. I think this might be the the titans thesis single most powerful program I’ve been using in writing my thesis. In fact, I now have dozens of projects in Scrivener, from academic projects to education, business ventures. For Dissertation. I love it.
So why use this and a word processor? For me, Scrivener’s real power is in the research/note-taking, initial composition and organization–especially organization!–phase of papers, thesis work. While using Scrivener will add a step to the process (as opposed to using Word from the start), I Scrivener saves me time in the long run. Scrivener is very affordable and they offer great customer support. Here are your four options for when you’re ready to purchase (education licenses are discounted): For how the program can be used by students writing in the area of Theology/Religion, see the video below. Though I’ve not used it, the psychology research proposal Dummies guide for Scrivener has excellent reviews for those wanting more help. While more a ‘service’ than ‘software’, consider a plan for backing up the files you create with all this software!
I recommend a physical home back up solution that you perform at least monthly (preferably more often) in addition to a cloud backup of your most important files. For the latter, DropBox is action research, my choice–sign up for free! One must, after all, be able to research, compose, format, and publish the thesis. For this category, Microsoft Word for Mac (2011) was the clear winner (amzn). Research. If I were on a PC, I would use the Windows version. While Pages for Mac has some nice features, OpenOffice is capable, too, and I’ve heard a few, mostly those working with the essay Hebrew language extensively, recommend Mellel (amzn) I have years of experience on research, Word and it is very widely used. Further, the University of Michigan Library has published a pdf online entitled “Using Microsoft Word 2011 (Mac) for Your Dissertation” to help! If you’re using Word for Mac for academic writing, it’s a must-read.
Yes. How To Write Analysis For Dissertation. WordPress. Starting a blog and writing consistently can not only have a positive impact on your thesis, but it can help you develop professionally and action even advance your career. I have a whole article on just this subject called Start an Academic Blog. Various programs on the market today specialize in organizing bibliographic data and integrating this data easily into word-processing documents. Parts. The top two I’ve heard people using are EndNote (amzn), and research education papers Zotero (one might add Nota Bene or Sente). I’ve only used Zotero, but its powerful, efficient, easy to learn/use, and costs nothing! I won’t be looking elsewhere. It also powerfully integrates into Word (for Windows or PC). I can also use it with Scrivener, my organizational and writing structure initial composition program. For a video on the power of action papers, Zotero for a theological library, see Andy Naselli’s helpful blog post here.
A lot of research goes into thesis writing. Let me introduce you to a web tool I’ve created to help: reSearch Engine. Just enter a search term, press enter, and presto. Many disciplines have powerful niche programs suitable for research in martina, a particular area. For me, the education ability to research, powerfully search and collate data regarding an ancient language is enhanced and streamlined with the aid of one of the handful of such programs available today. The top three programs in action education papers, this regard are Accordance, Logos, and BibleWorks, all now running on both Mac and PC. I have and use all three and each has its pros and cons. I will likely use Accordance for my “quick and dirty” searching and copy-pasting of ancient languages. Of course, its a powerful program that can do intense searches, and I will likely use it for this when such searches are needed.
Logos is my go to program for secondary resources, especially exegetical commentaries and bowdoin college essay prompt quick referencing church fathers or other ancient sources. Logos has not just saved me money on print books, it has saved me from needing multiple book shelves! I find myself using BibleWorks less and less, but this is action, primarily because using it requires me to boot up Windows with my virtualization software (Parallels for psychology research, Mac is research education papers, great, by the way)–though this is changing–and Accordance can do virtually everything BibleWorks can. I am a bit more comfortable doing complicated searches in BibleWorks vs. Accordance, but that may reflect my own inexperience with Accordance. Logos is also capable of original language searching, but I have not used it for this. I suppose I ought to how to write data analysis for dissertation, invest some time in action research papers, each of these programs and check back in with what I find. I’d be happy to hear what others are using and find helpful.
102 Responses to Software for Writing a PhD Thesis. What I can’t seem to psychology research, figure out is how to research education papers, load ZOTERO on my MAC. I did it once a while back, but have a new computer now. Narrative. I spent a couple hours once trying to download it and action education make it work… no joy #128577; a post on where/how to install would help me… I may be hopeless, I still like binders and paper copies to organize research by chapter… John Mark, good to hear from you! Do you remember when this was you tried to load it and dissertation whether it was the action version that runs in psychology, the Firefox web browser or the stand-alone version? I’m now using the stand-alone version for mac which functions like a normal app.
The other version I used (which is still available) was actually an extension in Firefox and, as I recall, was loaded differently. Action Research Education. Here’s the Zotero download page–you’ll see the stand-alone versions down the page a bit. If you happen to have used one version or there other (or both), your library is remember the titans, sync-able, one to the other. I hope that helps a little. OpenOffice is capable, too. The development of OpenOffice has been stalled for a while, since its sponsoring company (Oracle) dropped it and its new home (Apache) is still trying to get organized. LibreOffice is its main successor, with an education papers, active development community and several new releases. I enjoy LibreOffice and psychology have been using it for a study I’ve been writing over the last year (currently 60+ pages). David, thanks for research papers, commenting–it’s been a while since we’ve talked! I wasn’t aware of the circumstances of essay writing, development you’ve mentioned. I’ve used OpenOffice just a bit on Ubuntu, but since I already had Word, I wasn’t motivated enough to invest time into it (nor Ubuntu for the matter).
Sounds like LibreOffice is serving your needs quite well. I’ll have to action education papers, give it a look. Josh, Take a look at http://www.ActiveScholar.com for an all-in-one application, designed by academics for academics: ResearchWriter. Love to hear your comments. This looks interesting, but perhaps you can tell me how it is superior to the titans statement, Scrivener or other alternatives? It looks like the special pricing for your product is still twice the action papers cost of Scrivener, and, correct me if I’m wrong, yours requires the user to thesis, also use MS Word? I don’t know much about ActiveScholar, but from fiddling with it for about 5 minutes, I would instead recommend the free, more robust Citavi. Citavi is WONDERFUL and easily surpasses ActiveScholar, from what I can see. Action Research. One can watch Citavi videos at http://www.citavi.com/. Note: Citavi is for Windows computers, and data for dissertation if you want to run it on a Mac, you’d have to run Windows on your Mac.
Have you had a chance to use Scrivener? […] while back I mentioned using Scrivener for writing a thesis. Thought I’d share a few more thoughts on what I’ve enjoyed about it this […] Don’t forget Mendeley for bibliography organization…it’s the action best! mendeley.com/ In what ways do you think medeley is psychology research proposal, better than Zotero?
I have tried all of them–Zotero, Endnote, etc., etc. Education Papers. Mendeley wins HANDS DOWN! The one and martina hauck dissertation only, ONLY thing Zotero may do better than Mendeley is handle web snippets better than does Mendeley. Action Education. Maybe. I haven’t tried to how to write data analysis, hard to action research education, deal with web snippets in Mendeley. The Titans Thesis Statement. I have gotten around this by using the snippet program provided on action research, my laptop, saving my snippet in the titans thesis statement, PDF format, and storing it in Mendeley. Also, snippets can also easily be stored in Citavi (another program worth a serious gander for Windows users or those willing to run Windows on their Mac).
I tweak my academic workflow periodically, and at the moment Mendeley and Citavi are essential to my workflow. Citavi allows you to manage your note-taking and bibliography generation near flawlessly. Action Research Education. I do not use Mendeley for bibliography generation, just FYI. Some of what it is about Mendeley: the deep searching capability; the ability to annotate and note take and tag and key . . . Martina Dissertation. all while leaving the PDF clean; the collaborative capabilities; the backup; the simplicity of syncing between its desktop and web versions . Research Education Papers. . . I could go on. Once reason I can’t leave Mendeley: Say I vaguely remember an article I collected, but not too well. Perhaps I remember that it was about research, Peirce and Radford and algebra. Mendeley will allow me to research papers, quickly, quickly see which of the 1000+ PDF articles or book excerpts in the collection contain these three words. Then I can open and search the PDFs side-by-side, and deeply. Mendeley and Zotero do “speak with one another,” from what I’ve read. However, I only deal with Mendeley and Citavi for source management. Martina Hauck. I blog a bit about this. #128578; It’s a great topic.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Education. Using Scrivener and Zotero, it seems I can get similar results as you describe here, though since I have not tried it with Mendeley and how to data Citavi, I can’t offer a comparison. One difference appears to be Mendeley’s ability to handle pdfs, especially in annotating, etc. I can’t imagine the “time saving factor” is too different, but of course it all depends on action, what exactly you’re doing. Thank you. This is so helpful! Glad you found it helpful! As PhD you must use latex document preparation system. Perhaps in Math related studies, but this isn’t true across the board, esp. in humanities. Can you import fonts into Scrivener (e.g., Greek and Hebrew fonts)? So far as I know, Scrivener is able to lancia, use all (or at least most) the action papers fonts you have installed on your system, including Greek and Hebrew.
I copy and remember thesis statement paste a lot of my Greek and Hebrew in unicode, and I’ve had no issues with them in Scrivener. I’m just diving in to the writing of my dissertation (DBA) and I’m curious as to what “original language research” is. Is this specific to your topic? or do all research projects entail some form of original language research to education papers, some degree? Excellent post by thew way, I definitely think that Scrivner looks promising. i study theater literature in masters degree in thesis parts, iran.i wanna know which software is best for me to use. i should be compatible with office word and action education i can use persian font in it…what kind of software do you suggest?? is zotero good?can i use persian font in it?…my operating system is windows 7. I need this organisation to help me out on how to write thesis and dissertation. How about instead of remember the titans thesis statement, Scrivener, you go with Evernote! I have Evernote, but just haven’t found it as useful as many say it is. If your primary purpose is note taking, data organization, etc., then Evernote is probably great.
Scrivener offers a lot of other organization and word-processing features. I’m sure the two could be incorporated together fairly effectively, too. Indeed, Evernote is great to action research education papers, take note and dissertation organize your digital information (the notes, pdfs or any type of action, digital information). However, it is for dissertation, a poor word processor and I would never recommend its use for that purpose! Agreed, Michel.
I am using Evernote more now than I used to, primarily for record keeping. […] my previous post I discussed some of the software choices I’ve made for working on a PhD thesis. For writing, one of the better free word processors is research education papers, part of the Open Office software (google it). I assume at this point in your education you have written a fair bit, so I would consider sticking with the thesis word processor you feel most comfortable with, so long as it can handle your subject, field, etc. If it is a matter of money, talk to the IT dept. at your institution about your problem. Perhaps they will work with you on obtaining the software you need. What’s your url, I’d like to action papers, check out the software. Thank you for these very helpful posts! I currently use a Mac, but am planning to go back to a PC, and narrative essay I want academic humanities outlining and research papers note organization software that has longevity, so I don’t have to learn a new program in a year or two. I’m almost ready to try Scrivener, on the basis of college essay prompt, your review. But I’m not clear from your posts whether it does the two things I most need: a) allow one to expand and papers collapse outlines, so that one can view a short version, longer version, and longest version; and b) allow one to attach one’s notes to an outline section and martina hauck dissertation then, as one writes, delete them from that section (so one can “crunch” the notes into text, till they’re no longer notes!) i. Research. sub-subtopic i. ii. sub-subtopic ii. Sometimes I want to look at only the narrative essay writing TOPICS (i.e.
Arabic numerals), to see the broad shape of the project. Papers. Sometimes I want to look only at the TOPICS and subtopics, but not the thesis sub-subtopics, to see a slightly more detailed version without all the detail. Action Research Papers. And sometimes I want the whole thing (when I’m writing, for instance). My current technique is to have three outlines in three separate documents–short, medium, and write analysis long–and I’m constantly editing them all, trying to keep them in alignment, and failing! Re turning notes into text: currently I write my notes in education, paragraphs with headings (each paragraph is like a notecard). I then copy them into Word endnotes attached to lancia thesis, each relevant outline section, and then take them out of the endnote when I’m writing that section and organize them, deleting each one as I incorporate it into text. This doesn’t allow me to see them the action education papers way I would if they were notecards on my desk. And it’s very cumbersome (and I’ve occasionally accidentally deleted a whole endnote full of notes). This system also doesn’t keep them connected to their source texts, so I have to type out bibliographic info for the titans, each of them. My question: can Scrivener a) collapse and expand my outline; b) allow me to attach my notes to research education, outline sections, and delete as I go (ideally keeping notes linked to bibliographic entries).
Grateful for bowdoin college, your help! Scrivener should be able to action research papers, do all that you’re asking. (I’m not sure what you mean by “financial incentive,” but if you mean to action, imply that my recommendation of Scrivener is based on a financial incentive, you are wrong.) I started using Scrivener for how to, Mac a week or two on Joshua’s recommendation (thank you Joshua!) I’m happy with many aspects of it. However, I’ve found that I can’t load the many articles that are the sources for my project: trying to do so crashes the system. I plan to create reference links to these articles, but… this is a downside. Second, I’m having trouble managing the action research papers formatting, both of documents I’ve transferred in and documents I’ve created. For instance, I use hanging indents for my bibliographies.
But I can’t seem to create new hanging indents (only increase or decrease existing ones). Dissertation. Finally, there are times when folders seem to disappear from my binder (only some folders and action papers only sometimes). When I open the binder category (with the small arrow at the left), they don’t appear (causing panic that I’ve lost my work!) But if I close the system and reopen it, they then appear again. Any help appreciated! Thanks for the info. I’m not sure I have answers for you since I have not had those specific issues, but I would certainly let the folks at Scrivener know.

Hey Josh, thank you for the article. Bowdoin College Prompt. Have a question on Hebrew font within the research education papers Scrivener document. Did you notice any “space” issues between the lines when you copy and past Hebrew Text or type Hebrew words? It happens in the MS Word for me, and in Scrivener. So, I am wondering if you know of martina hauck, any solution for that. I use SBL Hebrew or Ezra SIL, no matter what font I use, the second I resize them, I will see so much space in between two lines.
I am in action education, the process of writing dissertation – OT Concentration (well, just getting started, actually). Hopefully I will be able to use Scrivener and others you suggested. Joel, I have noticed issues with Hebrew fonts. Few Word processors offer really great right to how to data analysis, left Hebrew font support. Mellel is an exception (www.redlers.com/mellel.html). However, I think you might be able to fix your line spacing problem in Word by going to the “Format” menu, selecting “paragraph,” and action research education changing the line spacing to “Exactly” and then entering the desired size of line spacing (e.g., 12 point, 24 point, or whatever). Thesis Parts. This ought to make the line spacing consistent no matter the font used.
Scrivener should be able to education papers, do similar formatting. Thanks for the reply. I do have Mellel, but I am not sure how to lancia thesis parts, use it well. I just do not want to run into compiling/exporting after working in Mellel or Scrivener, since my professors like “Word” #128578; So they can edit and action research papers send comments/remarks etc. Do you work with Mellel as well? My paper will be mostly with Hebrew Text. Also, I have noticed “numbering” format in your video. How did you do that in Scrivener? Thanks for your help!
I don’t use Mellel, but I know some others who do and like it. As for lancia, the numbering question, I am not entirely sure what you mean. Could you explain? (Also, I should also note that the video was done by someone else.) Ok. The numbering format I was talking about was the action research education numbers I have noticed in the video, right before the blue folders: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and narrative so on… I wondered if you knew about any software available for doing a PhD thesis in APA format? Or can you tell me at least how to action research education, hunt one down, Angelique, any of the major bibliography programs will handle APA, so which one you go with is a matter of (1) how much you like the program and (2) if it’s compatible with your word processor.
For example, the bibliography manager I use is free (Zotero), and I can use it with the two word processors I use, Word and Scrivener. Hope that helps! Hi, i have used Scrivener for a few years on both Mac and now on PC. Write Analysis. It is a very versatile and powerful tool. Yes, Scrivener has its advantages and action education papers disadvantages to be sure.
I use it everyday, but I also use it in tandem with Word. Thanks for this helpful post. Essay Structure. I’m in crisis trying to decide a word processor and bibliographic manager as I begin my dissertation. I’ve been using Nota Bene for academic work for several years but need to move into the MS Word and research papers unicode world. I have a MacBook but am glad to use a PC. My dissertation will include biblical Greek and Hebrew. Here are the remember the titans thesis statement combinations I am considering: – Mellel with Bookends (I’m not attracted to the Mellel learning curve.) – Word with Bookends. – Word with Zotero.
Will Zotero allow me to customize the papers Turabian format if my university has it’s own unique tweaks to this academic style? I’m using QIQQA for lancia parts, bibliographic management, PDF annotation and citations directly into Word, it has automatic keywords and action theme generation. It imports Bibtex directly from Google Scholar. It has brainstorming tools and online library syncing. The problem I have with it is that the citation fields are only remember the titans designed for Word, so for Scrivener I have to cite as a comment inline with my text and then insert citations once I have exported to Word. This works but isn’t as streamlined as I would like. An alternative for use with Scrivener is Mekentosj’s ‘Papers’ which uses plain text code for its citation tool. I was using Papers a lot (Windows and Mac) but as I started to use more of the features I discovers more and more features had bugs. Papers is however a potentially great solution on either platform.
I used Endnote for years but always found it had a very old style interface and wasn’t very helpful for the note and PDF annotation process. Yes, you can customize with Zotero, so Turabian should not be a problem. I have not used Mellel to any major extent, but I have two friends who are using it and like it (one is doing an OT in the NT sort of thesis, so he needs a Hebrew-friendly processor). Word for mac does not support right to left unicode which is silly but true, so you may have to education, use Word on Windows. Hope that helps! “For this category, Microsoft Word for Mac (2011) was the clear winner. ” I wrote my Thesis in Latex and research proposal the results certainly look better than Theses produced in Word. Assembling a large document with many figures and citations was a lot easier in Latex than it would have been in Word (based on what I’ve seen others have to go through). Rob, I would honestly love to research education, give Latex a good try, but I’m afraid I’m intimidated by the learning curve (I think is) required for it. In any case, when I say “winner,” I also take into account pragmatic concerns that are specific to me. But thanks for essay, sharing your experience! Scrivener looks good, just downloaded it.
Still trying to figure out how to education papers, do referencing in it. Might not use it due the same reason as with dissertation writing the reference management is narrative essay writing structure, a must. Also, In terms of action research education papers, attaching the documents to the chapter of concept looks weak.Perhaps, it is meant for parts, book writing primarily. Action Education. I guess there is no one answer to managing whole writing dissertation bit, where one software can help manage your writing, your pdf files and references. Please suggest, Thanks. I continue to use Scrivener (more than one year now) for organizing notes. Word continues to write analysis, be my main word-processing program, however. One can use shortcode references in Scrivener and then run the research education (.rtf) file through a bibliography management program which will convert shortcode to full citations. Lancia Thesis. Since Word files are so standard in action research education, my field, I just can’t escape it as a word processor. Thanks for your marvelous posting! I certainly enjoyed reading it, you’re a great author.

I would like to prompt, be able to education papers, highlight multiple documents/PDFs/Articles and then be able to easily scan/search and be able to remember the titans thesis statement, see a list of information highlighted or noted from multiple articles. Which program does this best? I realize none seem to do this from simple highlighting. But can I cut and paste in a note or annotate somehow and d this? Or must is simply be done manually in action research, a large word doc? Some pdf viewers (like Mac Preview) will display a list of highlighted material per pdf, but I’m not sure of a solution that can collect the material as you’ve described–That doesn’t mean there isn’t something out there. Two thoughts: (1) Evernote can auto OCR all documents (included PDFs and images) and college these become easily searchable as a whole; (2) One way to speed up the action research education manual highlighting is to select the line(s) you wish once, press ‘ctrl-C’ (or cmd-C) to copy, then toggle the highlighting (your PDF viewer likely has a shortcut, perhaps cmd-H). With the line also copied to the clipboard, you can quickly paste it into hauck dissertation your preferred word processor. So you essential select text, press cmd-C then cmd-H, then cmd-V to paste in document. I only know of one application on a Mac that will present a list of action research, all highlighted and annotated sections of a PDF: Sente. (http://www.thirdstreetsoftware.com/site/SenteForMac.html).
It is free for a small library, so you can find out if will work for you without having to pay anything. I just read Joshua’s comment, and indeed Preview will give you a list of highlights. I didn’t know it would do that! However, Sente may work well for you with multiple PDFs because you can export those annotations into an extra file, and then combine them.
That will avoid having to copy/paste everything. […] more here – Software for Writing a PhD Thesis – Joshua L. Mann. […] thank you so much for this incredible post. i’ve watched a number of the titans thesis, tutorials and i’m not sure what is the research papers best way for me to narrative writing structure, implement a form of note taking that would enable me to best leverage the education papers feature set of scrivener. all my research (so far) is in PDF. Remember Thesis. i know that i can import the files – Can i highlight in Scrivener? is it possible to create a separate note card for individual notes that i take while reading each article? or is research, there a better way? i.e. Research Proposal. – would it be better to create color coded tags for each article and then color code the notes – not sure how that would work as far as sorting and organizing. thank you all so much for papers, your help. with warm wishes. Ethan, Glad to hear you’re back at it. Best of luck in remember the titans statement, your essay writing. I’ll answer your specific questions first: Can i highlight in Scrivener?
You can highlight entered text, but not within pdf files (to my knowledge). Evernote premium would have an advantage here, as it can OCR pdfs and, I believe, offer highlighting functions. is it possible to create a separate note card for individual notes that i take while reading each article? or is there a better way? Yes, you can create a new “document” for each article, each article section, or more narrow if you wish. You can also nest them inside of each other, color code them, and add tags. Action. I’m not sure there is a ‘best way’. I think you’ll have to experiment a bit to martina, find what works best for you. Generally, I will create a rough outline of my paper (project, etc.) as early as possible, and begin filing notes under the headings of the rough outline. Sean, I have not had any issues with Word for Mac as you describe, but I tend to research papers, make my documents chapter length rather than writing chapters within one document. Kabir the Weaver-Poet by Jaya Madhavan. Like most Indian school children, I studied about Kabir the Saint; like all school children, I banished him from my brain post-exams. If prodded (at knife-point), I might have remembered him as the one who said it didn’t matter whether you were Hindu or Muslim, and cited the legend about mourners squabbling over religious dibs at research education papers, his funeral (cremate or inter?) only to martina hauck, find that Kabir’s body had been magically replaced by easy-to-apportion flowers. So really, I didn’t know anything about Kabir, until the folks at Tulika Books asked if I’d be interested in action research papers this book review. Jaya Madhavan’s Kabir the Weaver-Poet has now rooted Kabir in lancia thesis my mind as a gadfly who delighted in offending fundamentalists of all stripes, a religious poet whose work showcases an earthy, entertaining wit, a mystic as much as a logician, and a non-conformist who really didn’t give a damn about public opinion. He might be a saint, but he was quite the dude. So, who was Kabir?
Born circa the fourteenth century, he is generally regarded as “the first Indian saint to have harmonised Hinduism and Islam by preaching a universal path which both Hindus and Muslims could tread together.” Of unknown parentage, he was brought up in a Muslim household, and was a weaver by profession, which of action research, course seems peculiarly apt given his predilection for amalgamating contradictory religious dogmas. His poetry exhorts people to write, discover God through simplicity and goodness while shunning the education accoutrements of psychology, organized religion; the research education papers latter earned him powerful enemies amongst the establishment, with nasty consequences. This story could unfold today, and bowdoin college not much would be different. Gulp. Kabir… is aimed at the 12 years plus group, and Madhavan uses several interesting devices to hold her readers’ attention, such as a story paced over twenty-four hours, an abundance of weaving metaphors, and multiple narrators including anthropomorphic weaving equipment–a thread, loom, spindle etc. Education Papers! chat with each other about Kabir. And thankfully, the author’s account of this saint’s life is no hagiography. Madhavan offers inventive factual explanations for miracles attributed to psychology, Kabir without diminishing his persona, and her rueful, animated narrative makes you wonder why Kabir courts trouble as he does (he advocates for vegetarianism at a market meat-stall), even as you admire his steadfastness. And Kabir’s poetry adds further zing to the story. “Take ten cows, differently colored, yet the milk is the same,” he says, thus offending Pundits and Mullahs in equal measure. I felt a sense of impending doom along the narrative (the first chapter warns that Kabir might be in for a sticky end), and research papers the last section, which features a vicious outbreak of communal violence, will disturb younger readers.
But the essential truth of Kabir’s arguments shines forth for readers of all ages, as does the joy this man found in his eschewal of all that was narrow-minded and ugly. Madhavan’s portrayal ultimately had me remarking on Kabir’s sanity rather than his saintliness, and bowdoin college that’s perhaps the action education papers best compliment I could pay this beautifully-imagined account of one’s man campaign to change the world. And you know what? He did.* *According to Wiki, Kabir’s “…writings have greatly influenced the Bhakti movement…Apart from having an important influence on Sikhism, Kabir’s legacy is data for dissertation today carried forward by the Kabir Panth (“Path of Kabir”), a religious community [whose] members, known as Kabir panthis, are estimated to be around 9,600,000.” Kabir’s influence is education felt in popular culture even today. Check out The Kabir Project, which describes contemporary film and music themed around Kabir’s philosophy. The films look absolutely fascinating; won’t someone send me a Region 1 DVD? This review is how to write analysis part of the Kabir blogfest, organized by Tulika in association with the Kabir Project. “You can also blog about action papers, Kabir, write about how you have been touched by the titans thesis, his poetry or the stories around his life or write about how you have responded to him.” Please, do. Come, Before Evening Falls by Manjul Bajaj.
Come, Before Evening Falls takes place in the village of Kaala Saand in Punjab in research papers 1910, and features characters belong to the Jat(t) community, an agrarian sect with a long tradition of working in martina dissertation the armed forces. I was agreeably surprised by this novel setting—most contemporary Indian writing in English is action remorselessly urban, as is media reportage; it’s all too easy to lancia thesis, forget that seven in every 10 Indians live in a village. Bajaj writes about the period knowledgeably and with affection, and the book gives a real feel for village life a century ago. I’ve learnt a recipe for a poultice involving charred garlic in mustard oil on a half-baked roti, and I also now know how to make a cowpat; let my knowledge never require translation into action, Lord. Seriously: Bajaj has done some impressive research, and action research this reader is the richer for martina hauck dissertation, it. Of course, none of this would count if the story didn’t grab me. Jugni is eighteen, beautiful, and possessed of a calm good sense that flies in action education papers the face of her feelings for Raakha, the new school teacher. For Raakha is the bastard son of a second wife, landless and poor, while Jugni is rooted deep in her prosperous family and community. Lancia Parts! But the action papers deadest fly in this rustic stew is gotra , the Hindu custom of assigning patrilineal clans at birth.
Those with the same gotra, like Jugni and Raakha, are considered siblings, even if there isn’t a single shared ancestor over the past twenty generations. (Yes, it’s whack, especially considering the culture welcomes other consanguineous marriages.) But gotra laws were considered immutable, and the village would view Jugni and Raakha’s love as incest. Psychology! Will this relationship die unrealized, caught in a stasis between love and honor? Not if the headstrong Raakha has his way. Bajaj’s touch is painterly when describing the minutiae of her characters’ lives; when the canvas broadens to include, say, riffs on the British government, or the research nature of college prompt, human kind, she’s much less assured. But there’s some top quality writing here, and the author’s passion and sincerity shine right through, invigorating potential cliches at action education papers, every turn.
The burden of remember the titans thesis statement, family honor has traditionally (and unreasonably) been placed upon womenfolk in such narratives, but Bajaj subverts that notion; Jugni realizes that honor isn’t gendered, but is simply “what we each owed our own deepest soul.” Jugni and Raakha are utterly convincing, strongly defined and action education beautifully fleshed in, and Jugni in particular is charming, child-like yet possessed of a surprising maturity. Thesis Parts! And oh, the research education papers secondary characters aren’t half-bad either. Now for the (minor) bad stuff. I had two issues with this book. One, Bajaj isn’t as disciplined in how to write analysis describing Raakha’s romantic feelings as she is with Jugni’s, so some of the writing (in his POV) veers into romance novel territory. Papers! “He had tried his damndest to stay out of her way, to let it not come to lancia thesis, this, but the further he had tried to action research, retreat, the clearer her voice had grown in remember his head.” And on Jugni’s eyes: “If he could just sit and gaze into them uninterrupted he would be redeemed.” Ooogh. My other nit is with this book is the mixing of Punjabi and English. (Wait, it’s not the nit you expect.) Now, the characters obviously speak in Punjabi, and, equally obviously, Bajaj is trying to impart the flavor of the language in her writing. All good; I don’t mind Punjabi words peppering the text though I don’t speak the education papers language, and I don’t even have a problem with the Hinglish (Pinglish?)spoken by martina hauck, the characters. “I’ll buy you sliver toe-rings at the mela [fair], I promise, and I’ll always steal the best ambis [young mangoes] for you,” says a young cousin. But then, I came across “According to the boys, Tau [uncle] was only satthyao-ing…” The last word makes a gerund of the Hindi word Satthya, meaning to go senile, by adding the English “ing”. Research! Now, this portmanteau word is very clearly Bajaj speaking, for none of the boys could coin such a word–they wouldn’t know how to. The intrusive authorial voice all but broke the spell of the book for narrative structure, me; I saw the author sitting with a Macbook at a Barista typing that line.
Get me back to action, Kaala Saand village and the cowpats, I cried, and Bajaj did, but it was a close thing. As I said earlier, it’s just a nit, but this work is otherwise so strong that the nits might as well be clothed in neon. Lancia Thesis Parts! Please change this when the book goes into reprint, please, please. UPDATE: A note from the author informs me that the “satthyao-ing” is gone from the second edition. And that the action book is now available on Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007VXRT3K Buy it, y’all! Writers Against Racism: Uma Krishnaswami. Uma Krishnaswami is the India-born, New Mexico-based author of several widely-praised children’s books (Chachaji’s Cup, The Broken Tusk ). She talks about how racism has impacted her writing: “A long time ago, I left a writing group in tears when someone in how to the group suggested I assume a pseudonym and research papers write stories about “regular” kids. As if my name, and the South Asian kids in my stories were, you know, irregular! And I had to martina hauck, wonder, when I began to submit work to publishers in action research papers the early 90’s, whether there was some rule that people from my part of the world could only be shown as illiterate and thesis statement barefoot-and far away.”
This interview is part of Amy Bowllan’s excellent blog series “Writers Against Racism” on School Library Journal. Other South Asian YA authors Bowllan has interviewed include Neesha Meminger (whose YA book I’m currently reviewing), Mitali Perkins, and Rukhsana Khan. You can read the complete author interview here on action, Bowllan’s Blog. Trust Me marries one of India’s greatest national obsessions, Bollywood cinema (the other of course is narrative essay cricket), with the tested chick-lit formula. It’s a marketer’s dream, whispers my long-dormant inner MBA; my inner reviewer is action research papers busy gagging, recalling that other sure-fire winner, Olivia Joules and lancia thesis parts the Overactive Imagination. Interestingly enough, Trust Me’ s author Rajashree is identified solely by her first name. The only action research other mononymous (thank you, Ms. Internet) female author I can think of is Colette. Let’s get it out of the way–Rajashree is no Colette.
The subject is indeed the structure same– the exploration of female sexuality in a masculine world–but Rajashree uses a trident where Colette wields a tuning fork. Trust Me ‘s plot is perfunctory at best. A small-town girl Parvati moves to the big city, has a disastrous romance and consequently swears off men. Action Papers! She leaves her advertising career to assist on the sets of a Bollywood film. Enter the tall, fair, and handsome hero Rahul, who just might be the One. Can they work it out? Since this book has a hot red cover with a grown-up Powerpuff Girl gazing saucily over her shoulder, the answer is write analysis for dissertation glaringly clear. And yet, there is much to like about this tale of love and longing in Bollywood. The innocent-meets-rake formula, so loved by romance writers, fills me with fear and loathing (see my earlier post on Mills and research papers Boon romances for college essay, more this subject). I am so grateful that the “biggest-selling Indian chick lit novel” does not fetishize the heroine’s purity. Parvati is research papers no virgin; in fact, we find out in essay writing structure the first chapter that she has recently had an abortion.
The romance genre usually demands that the heroines tend to be younger, shorter, poorer, dumber and less sexually experienced than the alpha-male; thank you, Rajashree, for confounding almost every element of research papers, this miserable equation. Prompt! Protesting against his character having to strut shirtless, fully aware of his precarious toe-hold in the industry, concerned about his looks, and all of twenty years old, Rahul, rather than Parvati, is clearly the action education babe in the (Bolly)wood. Rajashree is a film-maker based in Mumbai, and Trust Me incorporates several cinematic devices, including wonderful sound effects (two characters run into each other with a “dhapak”), carefully visualized settings, and much much more. All of which work very well indeed with the story. More importantly, Rajashree brings an remember statement, insider’s look at Bollywood. While India’s film industry offers all-too-obvious fodder for satire, Rajashree manages to caricature the process without ridiculing those who find meaning in education it. A tricky balance indeed, and one that she strikes with just the right note of bemused detachment. I’m inclined to laugh along with the author when she describes how a particularly goofy dance sequence featuring a buffalo and a mostly-naked heroine successfully tips the distribution rights to research proposal, the film. We trust Rajashree to poke fun of the film industry without making us feel mean-spirited.
The chick-lit aspects of this book, however, constitute its weakest link . It’s like Rajashree switched the action education jet fuel for Enfamil when she moves the story away from the Bollywood sets. There is no real exploration of the complexities of the relationship or the dissertation sexual tension between Parvati and Rahul. The characters never move beyond whether the heroine should trust the hero or not–that’s the the issue at the first meeting, and at their final blow-up. The romance is consequently flatter than a dosa. My other grouse is with the research scenes featuring Parvati and her friends. Thesis! The heroine’s friends are a pillar of the chick-lit genre, serving to research education, demonstrate that the protagonist has a life beyond her feelings for the hero. Parvati’s interactions with her friends remind me of analysis, those high-school days when we’d earnestly analyze one another based on Cheiro’s handy palmistry reckoner. Parvati’s girlfriends exist solely to explain her romantic choices to the reader; there isn’t a single original aspect to their personalities or existence. I wish the leopard reputedly roaming around Film City had swallowed these characters the instant of their creation.
In sum, Trust Me is not frothy enough to work as a chick-lit novel nor deep enough to succeed as a literary work, and thus ends up falling between the two stools. But now that she’s got the action education first book out of the way, Rajashree will hopefully hunker down to research proposal, really write, and I’ll be first in the line for that novel. The Guardian features a quiz on research education, the literature of the subcontinent to college prompt, mark the education occasion of 60 years of India’s independence from British rule. It’s an elegant mix ranging from the unmistakable to martina hauck, the unguessable. Sample questions include: Who said “the ironic proposition that India’s best writing since independence may have been done in action papers the language of the departed imperialists is simply too much for some folks to bear”? The uncle of the two central characters Arundhati Roy’s Booker prize-winning The God of Small Children runs which kind of business? You can take the quiz here. I scored 10 out of a possible 12, earning a badhai (congratulations). Do check out the quiz to find whether you earn the title of structure, Guru-ji of action research papers, Indian lit.
This review of Tabish Khair’s Filming appears in remember the titans statement the Asian Review of Books. TABISH KHAIR ‘s FILMING is set in research education India’s film industry when the proposal business wasn’t yet Bollywood but just Bombay — back when Britain’s rule of the Indian subcontinent was drawing to an end, in the late nineteen forties. The novel’s narrator is a young Indian scholar based in present-day Denmark who decides to interview an obscure writer, Rizwan Hussein “Batin” for his PhD thesis. Batin, who was a film script writer in India a half-century ago, has since published a few short story collections and research papers his limited oeuvre ended in 1973. He lives in Copenhagen; the interview ought to be a lazy student’s dream. But Batin’s tale is complex and puzzling, with stories that dodge and weave around one another. It all begins in 1929 with the story of a traveling Bioscope exhibitor Hari, his partner Durga, and for dissertation their young son Ashok, who make their living showing films in small villages. Action Research Education! When they chance to meet a rich land-owner who is fascinated by films, a partnership is psychology proposal struck, and the Rajkunwar film studio is born in research education Bombay — at a price an thesis parts, unsuspecting Durga discovers too late. The next story Batin recounts is that of Bombay actor Saleem Lahori’s rise to fame against research, the backdrop of Bombay’s slums. Data! The two threads merge when Saleem becomes part of the Rajkunwar circle, and falls in love with Durga.
But there’s a greater drama being played out on the political stage — the partition of the region into the nation states of Pakistan and India, which forces Indian Muslims to have to research education, choose whether to stay in India or move to bowdoin college, Pakistan. Action Research Education Papers! The film industry has never bothered much about religion; Hindus and Muslims have co-existed peacefully for decades. But the violence of the subcontinent’s partition–over half a million dead and several million more displaced — makes it impossible not to research proposal, choose sides. Action Research Papers! Saleem, who has always thought of himself as an actor and an Indian, opts to remain in Bombay with Durga — at great personal risk from Hindu fundamentalists. But what, as the student repeatedly asks his host, does this story have to do with Batin’s life?
For Batin, as has been well-documented, opted to move to Pakistan before leaving for Denmark. The answer is tantalizingly revealed in the final pages of this multi-layered, intricately plotted novel, but hints abound in martina the narrative. Every reader knows the pleasure in finishing a suspenseful book and education papers immediately beginning it again to discover the artful clues missed on the titans, the initial read. FILMING isn’t a whodunit or a thriller, but made me go back for a second read just the same. This novel will delight those with an interest in the Indian film industry or in Indian history — or, indeed, in a tale skillfully crafted and craftily told. Reviews: The Peacock Throne by education papers, Sujit Saraf, Fireproof by Raj Kamal Jha. The two reviews were originally published in the Asian Review of Books. The Peacock Throne and lancia parts Fireproof. Two recent novels pose very different answers to the same question: how does a writer attempt to research education papers, make sense out of an act of senseless violence? One approach, perhaps, could be to essay structure, scrutinize the papers scene in the deepest detail, so as to construct a plausible how and why of the event.
When the sum of the facts seems inadequate, illumination might lie in examining the minutiae of the prompt setting; the personal can, after all, convey the political with an education, intensity an overview of structure, history could never achieve. SUJIT SARAF , in research papers his novel THE PEACOCK THRONE , provides a worm’s eye view of the political machinations surrounding India’s communal riots over the past twenty-odd years. The novel takes as its starting point the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, and dissertation the subsequent slaughter of members of the papers Sikh community by angry Hindus in the city of Delhi. Told from the viewpoint of Gopal Pandey, a tea-seller of minimal agency, THE PEACOCK THRONE encompasses the major political upheavals of the last two decades, including the destruction of the Babri Masjid (mosque) in 1992 by proposal, Hindu fundamentalists, and the ensuing religious violence. While rich shop-owners and political leaders slug it out for political power in India’s capital, Gopal, the tragic everyman figure, is research exploited hopelessly even as he fights to earn a modest livelihood selling tea from his makeshift stall.
Gopal possesses below-average intelligence, and his condition is further exacerbated by his myopic vision. His scratched and how to for dissertation clouded glasses (which serve as a somewhat obvious metaphor for his obliviousness to the political chicanery around him) do not help much. THE PEACOCK THRONE is a novel of Old rather than New Delhi, and communal politics rather than the action booming Indian economy determine a person’s fate. Bowdoin College Prompt! No information technology companies or multinationals here; family businesses hawk their sweets and saris cheek-by-jowl with brothels in action research the crowded streets of Chandni Chowk. The book’s title refers to the seat of power of the essay prompt former Indian empire, and it is this symbolic power that the residents of Old Delhi continue to fight for, over research education, 750 pages of (very) detailed description. While I admire Saraf’s painstaking depiction of the narrative essay writing seamy side of Delhi life, the action research papers welter of detail can overwhelm the remember thesis story. The author explains the convolutions and compromises of local Indian politics (and the role of religion in the same) in research papers a depth few fiction writers have attempted before, but it is lancia likely to be a long haul for the reader who does not have a prior interest in the subject. Furthermore, the narrative is relentlessly depressing — none of the characters earns our respect or affection, and while we feel sorry for Gopal, he is sometimes too much of a caricature of the common man for any real sympathy from the action reader. Ultimately, though, THE PEACOCK THRONE is a praise-worthy attempt to examine the social and religious violence pulsing below modern India’s effort to cast itself as a shiny happy economic superpower. Those who’ve formed their opinion of India based primarily on, say, Thomas Friedman’s relentlessly chirpy NYT column, should be chained to their La-Z-Boys and made to read this book.
A writer might also choose to explain the inexplicable by viewing the event through the lens of fantasy. Research! The seemingly implausible sometimes demands an authorial intervention in the form of allegory and magic realism, which might perhaps lead to a more accurate understanding than the facts could ever hope to engender. Action Research! RAJ KAMAL JHA takes the latter route in narrative essay his novel FIREPROOF , which deals with India’s 2002 religious riots, in which over a thousand people (most of them Muslims) were murdered in the state of Gujarat. FIREPROOF begins with the birth of a child, when another everyman, Mr. Jay, is presented with his baby at action, the hospital the day after the Ahmedabad riots. The infant has no recognizable human features apart from narrative, its eyes. Even as Jay deals with the shock, he sees a message “Help me” on the window of a room in research education the neighboring ward, and glimpses an psychology proposal, unknown woman’s figure. The woman subsequently gets in action research touch with Jay, promising to help him with the baby while his wife recovers in the hospital, and lancia thesis parts sends him to meet a dwarf named Bright Shirt, who will presumably explain all. Meanwhile, the city of Ahmedabad is on fire, and the murdered insist on telling their tales. Even as the dead refuse to be nameless and faceless, interjecting their life-stories in the midst of Jay’s narrative, voices of inanimate objects (a book, a towel and so on) relate their eye-witness accounts of the violence.
The carnage of the riots is ultimately encapsulated in three tales of rape, murder, and action research papers arson respectively. How do people who have been living together peacefully for centuries suddenly ignore all other identities and bonds to focus on religion alone? Who exactly is complicit, who is culpable — and where does the distinction lie? FIREPROOF poses some searing questions, and provides some thought-provoking answers, especially in the climax of the remember the titans thesis novel, when the unexpected connection between the action research papers characters (real, dead, and inanimate) and the slaughter of the preceding days is writing finally revealed. Jha is a courageous, confident writer who isn’t scared of taking risks with his narrative, and FIREPROOF , with its unconventional storyline and refusal to delineate fact and fiction succeeds brilliantly — for action research education papers, the most part. Bowdoin Essay! A narrative so dependant on whimsy calls for agile prose, but Jha’s writing undermines the passion of this fanciful tale. Economy is clearly not a quality the research education author aspires to, but how about a distinction between lushness and prolixity? There is, for instance, a scene where the narrator, Jay, is watching a television show of a man devouring insects.
The author not only mentions that the insects “ writhed, squirmed, crawled ” but goes on to say: “ Beetles, crickets, flies, cockroaches, ladybugs, spiders, dragonflies, caterpillars, insects I couldn’t name, red, white, green, yellow, black, monochrome, dichromatic, spotted, speckled, striped, banded…” And a description of Bright Shirt’s shirt: “…blue and red and thesis parts green and yellow and white and black, stripes, checks, triangles, circles, swirls, ellipses, straight lines, curls.” This book would soar so much higher if not for the leaden tails of modifiers weighing down the narrative every few pages; all too often, my eye would skim a series of endless descriptions in search of the elusive thread of the plot. THE PEACOCK THRONE and FIREPROOF are both important novels, seeking to explore the nature of papers, evil and the petty reasons that accrete to give birth to monstrous acts of violence. The most obvious thread tying these two novels for me, however, was the most banal — these books, with a bit of college prompt, judicious editing, could have halved their respective sizes, and thus doubled their impact. I might not revisit these novels again, but I’m certainly glad to research papers, have known them.
